Reading sponsorships

More than 500 Bonn residents volunteer as reading mentors or reading helpers in Bonn's daycare centers and schools.

Whether they read to children in Kindergarten, help primary school pupils learn to read or support young people in their reading skills, they all make a valuable contribution to promoting reading among young people.

In Bonn, there are many opportunities for people who want to volunteer to promote reading.

  • Would you like to take on a reading sponsorship?
  • Are you looking for reading mentors for your institution (daycare center, school or other)?
  • Would you like to work with us as an independent organization on the topic of reading mentors in Bonn?

The inter-agency cooperation "Reading mentors in Bonn" offers you information, advice, exchange and further development.

Extended certificate of good conduct

You will need an extended certificate of good conduct to work as a reading mentor. You can apply for the certificate free of charge at the Citizens' Services with a letter of request from the institution/organization for which you are working.

Declaration of commitment

Until you receive the extended certificate of good conduct, you may be able to start your reading activity if you submit a signed separate declaration to the institution/organization; the "Declaration of commitment in child and youth welfare", which you can find on the following page, can serve as a template:

Library card

Reading patrons have the opportunity to apply for a free library card.

Information and qualification events

Information and qualification events are held at irregular intervals. These seminars are examples:

  • Qualification for mentors
The introductory seminar provides basic information about the work and role of mentors and how to organize a (or the first) mentoring session. Practical tips on reading promotion and suitable materials are given and intercultural skills are trained.
  • "Reading and reading aloud in the context of multilingualism" - training for reading mentors in primary schools
In addition to German, many children's everyday lives include other languages. What role does this play in reading aloud? In addition to a short presentation on the topic of "multilingualism", methods will be discussed and evaluated based on the participants' own experiences and using selected examples of children's literature.

We will inform you here about new dates in the future. You are also welcome to suggest topics for events. Please send us an e-mail to:  freiwilligenagenturbonnde
